Final We have a Gospel to proclaim

It is over 10 years since we have celebrated a 7th Sunday of Easter. I always think of today's psalm response as my least favourite - unnecessarily archaic. We did use the straight response but in times past I have adapted a setting of The Lord is compassion and love to The Lord rules the heavens and the earth.

The piece at Communion was an even older resurrection. Iona words to a familiar Irish folksong I arrenged a simple second part for parish I was in in North London over 25 years ago. We sang it, unaccompanied, at the end of Communion on Maundy Thursday - myself and an Irish soprano from the choir.

We were joined by a couple of members of the University Choir who had come to sell tickets for the forthcoming concert. (The refectory does not serve breakfast until 10.30am on Sundays - to add a non sequitur.) So that they had something familiar to sing - I chnaged what I had planned to the Nardone motet which has proved a useful standby.

Shepherd of souls was new to us - though sung to Neumark, a fine chorale melody. It felt that it could do with an arrangement by Charles Wood (see Good Friday) to become a 'hymn concertato'

Communion AntiphonChrist our Passover
Communion As the deer longs (Palestrina/Bridge)
FinalThis joyful Eastertide

The pared down version did not affect the number of readings and psalms - though the 2 cantors had more to do than usual. It meant again the changing of established pieces. At the Preparation we repeated What wondrous love from the day before. On Good Friday it was the starker original harmonies with voices and violin; at the Vigil Marty Haugen's fuller accompanied arrangement/

For the last few years we have sung Out of Darkness or Holy is God at the end. This has deepened on singing them before Lent a couple of times. This year we had not made such preparations so we opted for This joyful Eastertide. This had the right bounce and length for the end of the Vigil liturgy.

Good Friday

30 March 2018

Psalm 30 Father, into your hands (mtgf)
Gospel Acclamation Lenten (mtgf)
Adoration of the Cross What wondrous love (Southern Harmony)
Calvarie Mass (Tallis arr. Wood)
Communion O Crux ave (Rihards Dubra)
When I survey the wondrous cross

The pared down version meant a different version of the psalm - sung unaccompanied. We are lucky that our accompanist is not only willing to sing but also appreciates being unaccompanied (I have known accompanists who have been personally affronted by unaccompanied singing and wanted to accompany anything). For balance I would note that some of singers feel we can venture unaccompanied too quickly before they are confident - i.e. they are singing the right note if it does not clash with the keyboard rather than whether it sounds right against the other parts. The paring down gave a reason to not do some music which have been staples. But the instruments gave the excuse to do my adaptation of Charles Wood's version of Tallis 1st mode melody from Wood's St Mark Passion. For the second verse there is a Bachian accompaniment of intertwining lines which adapt to the violins; in the 3rd version a descant which is marked soprano or flute in the original -and would require an accomplished voice.

Communion Antiphon This is my body (mtgf)
Communion Take and eat (Michael Joncas)
Procession Pange lingua (Ricky Manalo)
Watching Tantum ergo (chant)
Stay with me (Taizé)

As noted the plan this year was to be stripped down with just 2 singers and acccompanist. In the event we were joined by a singer and 2 violins who offten join us at these time but during term time attend the evening Mass. This was a lovely addition. I therefore occasionally 'stripped up' if that's the best way of expressing it. I had planned to do the chant of Ubi Caritas, partly to make the connection with Eucharistic Acclamations, however I decided that the Hurd version would be a better and more familiar use of resources.
