Once in a while the thought comes what might we add to our repertoire. The inspiration can be various: mutual admiration of Holst in the coffee queue, a new recording of French Christmas music by Gonville and Caius College. Both these led to the IMSLP website. The Holst, like a number of pieces there, is given as a manuscript - so I transcribed it. Though published I couldn't find a recording. Not top draw Holst - I suspect there is a tut from his daughter Imogen in her biography but in its fascination with the relationship between B- F and its slightly off-kilter pedal notes it was attractive enough. The Tombelle - again the whole of Noel au Village on IMSLP - was a wartime piece. It did a rough (dynamic?) translation of the French so that we would sing it in English. I thought it charming and it will be worth repeating at some point.

A question this morning about the Gloria - or rather a request for the congregation to sing the whole text. First, to not the incredibly positive of a congregation wishing to sing more! I did explain at the time that we sing a variety of Gloria some of which are responsorial and some through composed. Thinking about it afterwards, we sing 5 Gloria settings: 2 responsorial, 3 through.Though my instinct is to be happy for the congregation to join in with everything I have a couple e of practical quibbles. Firstly I would feel the need to include music for the whole setting on the leaflet which would take considerably more space than just the response; secondly, I would want to still respect the differentiation of male and female sections. There is something about respecting the composer's wishes and perhaps more fundamentally liturgically is something about difference and relationships - something different is at play liturgically when we don''t all do everything. A quibble I don't necessarily have, but I know those who do - is that everyone sings the whole text you do not need the response. It is deliberate that our responsorial settings are used in the Autumn and at Christmas. The Angels and Saints is one shared by both Sunday Masses as a common setting for chapel. It also makes sense that as this is the term when we are most likely to have new members to use a responsorial setting — a similar logic can be applied to Christmas. Is the effectiveness of a response potentially off set if soe or all of the rest of the congregation is singing the whole text. The request has made me question our practice - and I am still considering how it will develop.

Trying to give a structure to these Sundays of John 6 is challenge - to give them both a distinctiveness and a commonality. As it is the summer there is a sense our Communion repertoire is being arranged over a number of Sundays. I am sure I have said this before but when we have a priest who prefers Penitential Act I ( I confess) to 3 the contrast in key between Kyrie (F#m) and Gloria (C) is quite stark and I suspect not planned by the composers.

For the Summer months I do a monthly Mass leaflet, quite a squeeze when there are 5 weeks. It has the same as the weekly leaflet: Kyrie, Gloria, Readings with reference and caption, psalm response, Eucharistic Acclamations, Lamb of God and Communion antiphon. As they are used over a number of Sundays I have noticed that people turn to the Liturgy of the Word but do not turn the page back for the Eucharistic Acclamations - because they are known. I also use one Memorial Acclamation per month - July is C (so that August this year will be B When we eat this Bread. One final comment about the leaflet is that I rarely put the music for the Gospel Acclamation in - partly because of space but also an assumption that this is something people should know.

Final We have a Gospel to proclaim

It is over 10 years since we have celebrated a 7th Sunday of Easter. I always think of today's psalm response as my least favourite - unnecessarily archaic. We did use the straight response but in times past I have adapted a setting of The Lord is compassion and love to The Lord rules the heavens and the earth.

The piece at Communion was an even older resurrection. Iona words to a familiar Irish folksong I arrenged a simple second part for parish I was in in North London over 25 years ago. We sang it, unaccompanied, at the end of Communion on Maundy Thursday - myself and an Irish soprano from the choir.

We were joined by a couple of members of the University Choir who had come to sell tickets for the forthcoming concert. (The refectory does not serve breakfast until 10.30am on Sundays - to add a non sequitur.) So that they had something familiar to sing - I chnaged what I had planned to the Nardone motet which has proved a useful standby.

I was away enjoying Sunday Mass at Holy Trinity, Georgetown. There, I was interested from a liturgical/music point of view priority seemed to be given to appropriate texts. Of the 'hymn slots' two were given to texts linked closely to the Sunday sung to familiar tunes.

Easter Sunday

Communion As the deer longs (Palestrina/Bridge)
FinalThis joyful Eastertide

The pared down version did not affect the number of readings and psalms - though the 2 cantors had more to do than usual. It meant again the changing of established pieces. At the Preparation we repeated What wondrous love from the day before. On Good Friday it was the starker original harmonies with voices and violin; at the Vigil Marty Haugen's fuller accompanied arrangement/

For the last few years we have sung Out of Darkness or Holy is God at the end. This has deepened on singing them before Lent a couple of times. This year we had not made such preparations so we opted for This joyful Eastertide. This had the right bounce and length for the end of the Vigil liturgy.

Good Friday

30 March 2018

Psalm 30 Father, into your hands (mtgf)
Gospel Acclamation Lenten (mtgf)
Adoration of the Cross What wondrous love (Southern Harmony)
Calvarie Mass (Tallis arr. Wood)
Communion O Crux ave (Rihards Dubra)
When I survey the wondrous cross

The pared down version meant a different version of the psalm - sung unaccompanied. We are lucky that our accompanist is not only willing to sing but also appreciates being unaccompanied (I have known accompanists who have been personally affronted by unaccompanied singing and wanted to accompany anything). For balance I would note that some of singers feel we can venture unaccompanied too quickly before they are confident - i.e. they are singing the right note if it does not clash with the keyboard rather than whether it sounds right against the other parts. The paring down gave a reason to not do some music which have been staples. But the instruments gave the excuse to do my adaptation of Charles Wood's version of Tallis 1st mode melody from Wood's St Mark Passion. For the second verse there is a Bachian accompaniment of intertwining lines which adapt to the violins; in the 3rd version a descant which is marked soprano or flute in the original -and would require an accomplished voice.

Procession Pange lingua (Ricky Manalo)
Watching Tantum ergo (chant)
Stay with me (Taizé)

As noted the plan this year was to be stripped down with just 2 singers and acccompanist. In the event we were joined by a singer and 2 violins who offten join us at these time but during term time attend the evening Mass. This was a lovely addition. I therefore occasionally 'stripped up' if that's the best way of expressing it. I had planned to do the chant of Ubi Caritas, partly to make the connection with Eucharistic Acclamations, however I decided that the Hurd version would be a better and more familiar use of resources.

When Epiphany falls on Sunday 7 or 8 January Baptism of the Lord is celebrated on the adjacent Monday so the next Sunday is the 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. This will attempt to be a extensive catch up - with some possible blanks on the way.

Further reflection suggests that my 'ideal' celebration may be related to resources available. As a rule for Christmas and the Triduum there is a full range of voices available, whereas for the Epiphany while holidays and visits are still occurring it is less certain. So today we were just cantor and piano. I think there is also the feeling at Christmas that there is time to do all the carols and other music we hope t, whereas the Epiphany has one 'shot'.

Today we had the phenomenon, which have suspected for a number of weeks that our microphones are turned up quite high, this with the addition of a visiting priest who projected as though they were not there affected the delicate alchemy of congregational singing.
