Final Praise my soul

It was a suggestion in The Liturgy Planner to sing Spirit of God within me to Coe fen. We have used the Joncas tune previously, which as a homage to Down Ampney I had presumed shared the same metre. However it fits Coe Fen well - with just a stretch in the first line. I wondered about tweaking it - something like Spirit of God within my heart - but resisted.

We have sung the first hymn before - but I am not sure to what tune. I had thought Conditor alme siderum but wrong metre. Today it was Tallis' Ordinal (Come Holy Ghost) which I don't when we last sang as a tune. My first impression was that people did know it but the weak spoken responses later might suggest otherwise.

6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Penitential Rite Winter (mtgf)

Communion Antiphon They ate and gad their fill (mtgf)
Communion The Call (Vaughan Williams)
Final Tell out my soul

Psalm 1 Happy the man is often cited as example where the Christology of the New Testament is grafted onto the Old. The vir of Beatus vir is Christ. It is a sign of how the Lectionary both builds on a hermeneutic of connecting Old and New Testaments and also breaks it that the Lectionary ignores this sense. The man today is the same person as the Lukan beatitudes are addressed to - i.e. the subject of Christ teaching not Christ himself.

Sometimes one sings a piece and in doing so remember why you have not done so for a while. Marty Haugen's As a tree would seem a perfect fit for today picking up the tree imagery of first reading and psalm with verses based on the beatitudes. Apart from the annoyance in the verses that sometimes Blessed is two syllables, sometimes one, it does not seem to work for us - repay the necessary effort. I suspect the harmony in the verses needs equal (upper?) voices so that it works with the accompaniment.

Final Holy is God

3 years ago this was the last Sunday before Lent and Holy is God made a good end to the short season. It was still a good combination of 'holy' and sending out. I have never been sure about the Schubert as an English Mass part - too sustained for an acclamation - but in German it provided a suitable post-Communion reflection.

We have had a new Penitential Act this season. the leaflet just said repeat after cantor and it took 3 Sundays to find a stable form: first week wrong direction, second Ok but needing some harmonic revision, third settled.

The first few Sundays of Year C have some of the most striking passages from the Old Testament, Gospel and the resonant section from 1 Corinthians. It is too rich. The music pointed to a eucharistic understanding of Cana - which I'm not sure is the point - but there were not strong contenders for why it is here on this Sunday.

A question this morning about the Gloria - or rather a request for the congregation to sing the whole text. First, to not the incredibly positive of a congregation wishing to sing more! I did explain at the time that we sing a variety of Gloria some of which are responsorial and some through composed. Thinking about it afterwards, we sing 5 Gloria settings: 2 responsorial, 3 through.Though my instinct is to be happy for the congregation to join in with everything I have a couple e of practical quibbles. Firstly I would feel the need to include music for the whole setting on the leaflet which would take considerably more space than just the response; secondly, I would want to still respect the differentiation of male and female sections. There is something about respecting the composer's wishes and perhaps more fundamentally liturgically is something about difference and relationships - something different is at play liturgically when we don''t all do everything. A quibble I don't necessarily have, but I know those who do - is that everyone sings the whole text you do not need the response. It is deliberate that our responsorial settings are used in the Autumn and at Christmas. The Angels and Saints is one shared by both Sunday Masses as a common setting for chapel. It also makes sense that as this is the term when we are most likely to have new members to use a responsorial setting — a similar logic can be applied to Christmas. Is the effectiveness of a response potentially off set if soe or all of the rest of the congregation is singing the whole text. The request has made me question our practice - and I am still considering how it will develop.
