The choice of psalm and responses on the Sundays of Lent always strike me as initially odd. Today you might think you would get in the light of the gospel one of the great penitential psalms. When the gospel of the prodigal son reappears later in the year it is paired with Psalm 50 (51). Taste and see? It suggests a more eucharistic understanding of the story which is also present in the first reading.
